YutLik

You’ll often find colourful calendars hanging on the walls of Chinese households, restaurants, and supermarkets. Those calendars are called YutLik. They feature the solar and lunar dates, daily dos and don’ts, dream analyses, and a number of auspicious things deeply rooted in Chinese tradition. Unfortunately, many Chinese North Americans of my generation can’t read Chinese, which means they’re missing out on a quintessential part of Chinese culture.

So, Sally Funga Toronto-based Associate Creative Director and Art Director—and I collaborated to make an English translation of YutLik.

We began the project in 2021 as an Instagram account, and by popular demand we created physical copies of the calendars for 2022.

Since then, we’ve opened an online store, found distributors in Canada and the US, got featured on a podcast, and even had a shoutout from comedian Ronny Chieng.
